A tour and selection of works from the highly reclusive Scottish artist PUB (Ampoule)
Pub is a well regarded, yet highly mysterious (if not mythical) figure in the world of Dub techno and Electronica. Very little has ever been written or is even known about this elusive yet cult-like Glaswegian producer.
According to his Discogs page, PUB’s been making music since he was 14. Recording his first EP under the name ‘Lucky and Easy when he was 17, which he duly released on his own imprint Ampoule. Very much the epicentre for a lot of his output, his music has also found its way to the likes of Delsin, Ann Aimee, Talent Hoover, Ear Plug and Exalt over the years.
Allegedly, he once gave a radio interview in Dublin but we’ve not had any joy in locating the recording. He has also done a handful of small tours in the UK, Ireland and Germany, whilst also releasing other music on Ampoule under different monikers such as Moped Endo and Omen’s Jot.
His work sits somewhere between the canon of Basic Channel, Boards of Canada and Plaid, with a nod at times to the more epic end of Carl Craig. A fusion of deep lustrous soundscapes that sparkle with a healthy touch of machine made magic, his work is equally measured as it is wandering. Knit together with complimentary harmonics as well as moments of scattered chaos, there’s a lot to admire across the length and breath of his catalogue. Whilst it is somewhat surprising PUB isn’t more widely known, having put out 8 LPs and over 40 EPs since making his debut way back when, there again the shroud of mystery is also a huge part of his charm.
Rather than speculate, we’ve decided illuminate and pull together a selection of his music to bring a focus to the rich sonic tapestry and audio treasure trail this highly talented musician and producer has been leaving behind over the last few decades. Providing a touch of amplification to his otherwise softly spoken musings, there’s a lot to be said when you get a little closer.
