Innate playlist 16: Polytunnel’s guide to Rephlex Records

Made Magnetic and Moot Tapes label boss Polytunnel picks 33 gems from the much loved Rephlex Records catalogue

Hailing from Kilkenny (Ireland), Polytunnel aka Pete Lawlor describes his work as a meeting point of sounds and personal interests, never bound by type fit genre or scene. His musings range from acid inflected melodic Electro driven grooves meshed with breakbeat, to raw and pulsating machine fuelled jams that embody a certain class and quality, to woozy downtempo synth laden sketches that never fail to capture the ear with an often blissful edge, that very much appeals to our earbuds.

Having cut his teeth as resident DJ at Dublin venue The Bernard Shaw for years, he made the move over to Glasgow in 2019. During that same year, he also caught the attention of London-based party starters, Childsplay, along with Sub Club resident Domenic Cappello. Although only having released a handful of EPs, he’s already gained the attention and acclaim from the likes of Mixmag, DJ Mag, Inverted Audio, Xlr8r as well as support from the late and great Andrew Weatherall on his much-missed NTS show, Music’s Not for Everyone.

An equally gifted live artist, he also ha a hand in running two record labels – Made Magentic and Moot Tapes. We’ve been following Pete for a few years and had the pleasure of meeting him in person back in the spring of 2023. With the latest Made Magnetic EP having just landed with a contribution from Innate’s very own ‘Gilbert’ on the ‘All Acid Everything Vol.2’ EP. We asked him to dig through the catalogue of the mighty Rephlex Records and select 33 favourite cuts for the next Innate Playlist.
