Spanish IDM & Electro artist Annie Hall makes her Delsin debut
A purveyor of Electronica, IDM, Electro and underground Techno for over two decades now, Annie Hall is one of those rare gems in the modern day era. Having carved her own sonic path that remains firmly in the camp of those who refuse to compromise their sound or integrity. We have long been a fan of her work, forever managing to straddle a style and sound that oscillates perfectly between dance floor appeal and home listening.
Although her life behind the turntables started in 2003, having had her first encounter with vinyl as a younster, thanks to her brother being involved in the reggae, dub and roots scene. Her ear for production has not gone unnoticed over the years, having appeared on the likes of D1, Detroit Underground, CPU, Semantica, 20/20 Vision and more.
She finally makes her full Delsin debut and could not have chosen a better time to surface with this peach of a 4 track EP: ‘Practical Optimism’. After making a contribution to the Dsr / ÆX white label V.A. series back in 2021.
The 4 cuts layed out ‘Practical Optimism’ reflect Hall’s well honed musical and production prowess as she sets out how the borders of Detroit-inspired atmospherics can meet and meld so well with classic Aphex, B12 and Blackdog-esque influences. After all, what is there not like?
Kicking off with the throbbing bass tones of ‘Divergent Thinker’, she sets the pace with jittering yet solid beats, as vocal snippets repeat on cue, all of which give way to warm chords and twinkling keys. Diving into ‘Managing Nothing’ next, the atmosphere becomes somewhat anxious and unsettling as she moves uptempo with a step-to beat, whilst slowly evolving synth parts and heavy low end all feed into the sense of foreboding.
Over on the flip, ‘’Ability To Multitask’ ups the ante with snappy broken beats, a classic dose of FM synth bass all wrapped in gorgeously uplifting melodics that could well be our favourite moment on this EP yet. Last but by no means least, she signs off with the title track ‘Practical Optimism’, rolling out with a stripped back breakbeat, elastic bass and dreamy chords that all smack future-facing vibes.
With a bit of luck, we’ll be hearing much more from her in 2025 and beyond – and if this EP is any evidence, you’ll hopefully agree.
