HOT OFF THE PRESS: Abacus

Prescription and Guidance mainstay Abacus drops 3 slices of delicious deepness on ‘Analogue Stories Vol 2’

An unsung hero of the Chicago sound since the early 90s, Austin Bascom aka Abacus returns with this latest missive. A signature 3 track EP packed full of sparkling rhythms and pulsating energy that pushes the boundaries of deep, hypnotic house in fine style – landing on French imprint Phonogramme.

For those who do not stray far from the deeper shades of House and Techno, Abacus is one of those trusted artists you’ll never stop coming back to. Having put his touch to imprints such as Prescription and Guidance, there’s a lot to admire and play in his back catalogue (and probably something we’ll be writing more about in another feature).

Thankfully, he is still turning out wonderfully crafted records that embrace everything that is good about the music we love. Shooting straight from heart, embracing warmth and soul with a touch that is emotive as it is heady and escapist. Bascom follows up his recent outing on his recent outings on NDATL and Innermoods with ‘Analogue Stories Vol. 2’ for French imprint Phonogramme.

Leading with the adroit patter of ‘Ancient Technology’, beats roll tight as you find yourself enveloped with slow turning, thickly coated synthesis as dubbed out vocals are set to cycle and bring the track to a peak.

‘Flight Master’ on the flip accelerates a notch, leading with organic percussion and rolling bass alongside a 909 that combine neatly with airy layers of pulsating electronic riffs to inject layers of fizz: making this a seriously addictive groove for discerning heads. Signing off in style, ‘How U Do It’ is a musical odyssey, pieced together with layers of instrumentation, piano and percussion that should bring a smile to the most ardent of heads.
