Livity Sound label boss brings his ‘Pulse’ series to a close with the ‘Pulse Phase EP’
Just over a year ago, Livity Sound label boss Peverelist made a triumphant return to his much respected imprint after a 5-year release hiatus – kicking off with a trio of records under the ‘Pulse’ banner to celebrate the label’s 60th release.
One of Bristol’s leading beat scientists for well over 2 decades, he now brings the series to a close a year on, delighting us with yet another set of pure fire melodic futurism that weaves enduring club structures to his own vision. Pulse Phase EP underlines his broader approach to setting tempo and style he’s chosen to take on in his latest period of output, which is soon to be translated into a new live set.
If you detected a leaning towards nostalgia amongst the crisp modernism of the Pulse series, you’re not far wrong in some sense. After all, Peverelist is a connoisseur of the many tenets of Electronic rhythm – dub and bass roots aside. It most certainly comes through loud and clear in the looped-up jacking House meets starry-eyed Detroit Techno synth hooks of ‘Pulse IX’ – an ode to the Motorcity in it’s purist and most uplifting sense. As high-pitched melody builds until all the different elements collide in an eruption of joy, this may well be Pev at his most straight up. All the same, it lands a treat. Not one for repeating himself, ‘Pulse TEN’ veers back to lean a soundsystem workout – driven by a flowing lead arp, frequency sub pressure, interspersed with cyclical drums and whispy effects.
One the flipside, ‘Pulse XI’ revisits and remoulds the 90s UK Bleep Techno blueprint, taking a 4/4 beat and injecting deep, dubby intentions as the rest flows. Injected with massive white noise patches for dramatic flair and the kind of hi-hat work that makes his tracks so enticing. He completes the picture with Pulse ‘XII’, capturing the skeletal pressure of 2-step at its most sleek and deadly akin to his Punch Drunk missives. For those who are only just stumbling on this essential series, it’s an opportunity to hear him explore some of his musical DNA more explicitly, cast in universal motifs – all propelled by the unrelenting pursuit of the new.
