Phenomenally popular with British youth in the 1970s, taking the North of the country by storm – Northern Soul is largely considered as one of the precursors to the modern dance music scene as we know it today.

Fuelled by tight-knit group of music enthusiasts – djs, promoters and people who loved to dance to the frenetic sounds of rare soul that emerged in the Tamla Motown era, yet had eschewed commercial success; the scene is largely associated with particular dance styles and fashions that grew out of it. Reaching its height of popularity in the mid to late 70s, venues such as the Highland Rooms at Blackpool Mecca, Golden Torch (Stoke-on-Trent) and Wigan Casino were at the centre of the movement and became famed for their all-nighters.

Released in both cimemas and on DVD on the 20th October, Northern Soul the film is directed by Elaine Constantine and tells the story of two working-class teenagers from an industrial town who discover the music and the DJ-led movement. Intended to appeal to generations of fans (new and old) who can relate to youth culture from another era, it stars two previously unknown actors, Elliot James Langridge and Josh Whitehouse and includes cameos from other British actors such Ricky Tomlinson, Lisa Stansfield, Christian McKay, Steve Coogan and John Thompson.

Since the launch of the campaign to promote the movie, the response via social media has been extremely healthy with the film being given a one off showing at 125 cinemas around the country, making it one of the biggest short-window feature film releases. Turned down by countless UK distributors and presented to audiences without benefit of a UK film festival platform, the film has astounded the.
