Adventure into the heart of Brasilian rhythms with Gilles Peterson’s Sonzeira collective: Brasil Bam Bam Bam
As we draw ever closer to the world cup kick-off in Brasil this summer, BBC Radio stalwart and all-embracing music/cultural enthusiast – Gilles Peterson – has chosen his time wisely to round up some of the countries’ finest talents to take centre-stage and make a new record.
A journey through the different flavours of authentic Brazilian music and culture, “Sonzeira: Brasil Bam Bam Bam” is set to be released on May 19th. As a true champion of the music in both the clubs and on the radio for the last 25 years, Gilles’ passion and ability to bring together some of Brasil’s finest artists for the very first time, is a testament to his passion.
Recorded in Rio, Sonzeira features the talents of UK production trio Sam Shepherd (Floating Points), Dilip Harris and Rob Gallagher (2 Banks of 4) alongside Kassin (Rio Big Band Orquestra Imperial). Set about creating all-new material, the group features mesmerising vocal performances from superstars young and old; including singer Seu Jorge and the grande dame of samba, Elza Soares.
With such a melting-pot of sounds across the entire country, the album tries to reflect and capture the nation’s true musical heritage and diversity: Batucada, Samba, Bossa Nova, Baile Funk, Tropicalia… all whilst adding a modern twist.
